NA should work to protect democratic norms and values: PM
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has expressed the confidence that Nepali Army will work as per the aspiration of Nepali people for the protection and promotion of democratic norms and values.
In his message on the occasion of Army Day, the Prime Minister, who also holds the Defense portfolio, expressed the confidence that NA would extend its important contribution to respecting people's aspirations and to promote democratic norms and values and lifestyles in the days to come.
".........All Nepali people, including the NA, need to commit to protect sovereignty and national reconciliation on the occasion of Army Day," the premier added.
He further said that NA should be cautious for the protection of the dignity and sovereignty of the country.
The Prime Minister further said that it is the need of the hour for the Nepali Army to change its duty, responsibility and behaviour in accordance with the democratic governance system.
The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction with the steps taken to democratize the NA.
"It is a matter of satisfaction to have positive initiatives begun for preservation of democracy, respect for human rights and for co-working with the civilian administration in the process of democratisation," the Prime Minister added.
Prime Minsiter Koirala also lauded the role of NA in the peacekeeping missions under the UN.
Likewise, in his message, Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) Rookmangud Katawal stressed the need for conceptual and organisational changes in the army.
Expressing commitment to the democratic norms and values, the CoAS reiterated NA's commitment to national and international humanitarian laws, rule of law and to its apolitical image.
Katawal also stressed the need of making the army structure more inclusive by incorporating people of marginalized groups. nepalnews.com pb Feb 16 07
