Students demonstrate against King's statement
Various student and youth organisations organised protest rallies against the message given by King Gyanendra on the occasion of Democracy Day on Monday.
Maoist youth wing, the Young Communist League (YCL), and the student wing, All Nepal National Independent Student Union (Revolutionary), jointly organised a protest rally in the capital Monday afternoon. The rally had converged into a mass meeting at Ratna Park.
Waving red and black flags, the demonstrators chanted slogans against monarchy and in support of 'republic Nepal '.
Addressing the mass meeting, chairman of Maoist-affiliated trade union, Salik Ram Jamarkattel, and other Maoist leaders stressed for early declaration of republic Nepal as the monarchy "is engaged in conspiracy against the Nepali people".
Meanwhile, nine student bodies affiliated to the ruling coalition also organised demonstrations in the capital. The rally that began from Ratna Rajya Campus at Exhibition Road passed through various places before converging into a mass gathering at Dilli Bazaar Chowk.
ANNFSU president Thakur Gaire told Nepalnews that the rally was organised to protest the statement of the King and to put pressure on the parties to take early decision for a republic.
Addressing the gathering, student leaders Himal Sharma, Babu Ram Koirala and Gaire said the King's statement was an indication that monarchists were still active to disrupt the upcoming constituent assembly polls. nepalnews.com ia Feb 19 07
