PM instructs Minister to resolve garbage problem
As the heaps of uncollected garbage continue to swell in the capital valley, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is learnt to have instructed Local Development Minister Rajendra Pandey to take necessary steps to resolve the problem.
Instructing Pandey over telephone on Monday, PM Koirala urged the minister to do everything necessary to prevent outbreak of diseases due to the growing volume of uncollected garbage left at every nook and corner of the city for the past 12 days.
The authorities of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) have been unable to collect the garbage after residents living around Sisdole dumping site refused them to dump the garbage until and unless they met their demands like building schools, hospitals and job opportunities.
Minister Pandey had, on Sunday, said that the government might even use force, if necessary, to dump the garbage in the Sisdole site – which was built at the investment of Rs 1 billion.
He said that the local residents were not allowing them to dump the garbage even after the government had expressed full commitment to fulfill their demands.
Meanwhile, Maoists are planning to dump garbage at the Ministry to expose the inefficiency of the authorities to manage garbage problem. nepalnews.com sd Feb 20 07
