Garbage clean up begins after understanding
You may now take those hands off your nose. Finally, the municipal authorities have started collecting the heaps of stinking garbage from the city thoroughfares.
After causing all kinds of problems from olfactory attack to traffic snarls by the expanding volume of garbage claiming the precious inches of Kathmandu roads for the past 13 days, the eight parties and the local residents of Sisdole reached an understanding on the management of garbage following which the municipal authorities have started the clean up.
On Wednesday, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) transported 450 truckloads of garbage to the Sisdole landfill site.
At a meeting held in the Ministry of Local Development, on Wednesday, leaders of eight parties including the Maoists expressed their collective commitment to keep the city clean.
The meeting among the parties, authorities and the local residents reached a nine-point understanding whereby the Ministry has agreed to prepare a national act to manage sold waste; and explore at least two more alternative landfill sites to address short and long term demands of the metropolis and surrounding areas. Likewise, the Ministry has also agreed to immediately initiate socio-economic development efforts aiming to benefit residents of Sisdole and surrounding villages. nepalnews.com sd Feb 22 07
