Proper implementation of competition law stressed
Participants of an interaction have stressed the need of proper implementation of competition law for the protection of consumer’s rights.
Speaking at an interaction jointly organised by the South Asian Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) and Action Aid Nepal, they said that proper implementation of competition law is essential to protect consumer’s interest as consumers failed to benefit from the liberal economic policy adopted by the state.
Speaking at the interaction, member of National Planning Commission Dr. Pushparaj Rajkarnikar said that the act is relevant and it would also help for the protection of the interest of both the entrepreneurs and the consumers.
Presenting a working paper, Programme Coordinator of SAWTEE, Dhurbesh Chandra Regmi stressed the need of forming a independent and autonomous body to monitor effective implementation of the act.
Second vice-chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Kush Kumar Joshi opined that the competition law is very important to increase competitive capacity of the entrepreneurs.
He however expressed reservation over the less participation of private sector in the competition promotion board and demanded restructuring in the board.
Chairman of Nepal Chambers of Commerce Surendra Bir Malakar said though the act is beneficial for the consumers and entrepreneurs, it failed to check some non-competitive activities.
Speaking at the programme, general secretary of the Consumers Forum Jyoti Baniya stressed the need of timely amendment in the act and proper implementation of if for the protection of consumers’ interest. nepalnews.com pb Feb 23 07
