Nepal-India agree for construction of transmission lines

Nepal and India have agreed to install inter-country transmission lines for electricity sharing.

Managing director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Arjun Karki and director of Indian Infrastructures Development and Financial Service DK Mittal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect on Friday.

As per the MoU, four inter-country transmission lines would be constructed for power sharing between both the countries.

After completion of the transmission lines Nepal would be able to sell electricity to India during rainy season and import electricity from India during winter.

Both the countries have not been able to supply electricity in absence of transmission lines.

Karki informed that the construction of the project would be completed in two years. He further informed that Nepal will not have to face the problem of load-shedding once the construction of transmission lines were completed.

He also informed that Nepal needed to invest US$130 million for the project while the cost in the Indian side would be three times higher than the Nepali side.

He further said that after the completion of the project there would be more investment in Nepal’s hydropower sector as the investors would be able to sell the power to the Indian market. nepalnews.com pb Jan 05 07
