PM, Prachanda discuss promulgation of interim statute; 8-party meet Monday

Prime Minister Girirja Prasad Koirala and Maoist supremo Prachanda held discussion on Sunday in a bid to settle the dispute over the blueprint of the interim constitution and set an earliest possible date for its promulgation.

The meeting held at Koirala’s official residence in Baluwatar ended with a decision to hold a meeting of the top leaders of the eight parties on Monday to resolve the dispute over the draft interim statute, which was finalised on December 16, Home Minister K.P Situala, who was present at the meeting, told reporters.

Appointment at the universities, reinstatement of police posts and return of the VDC secretaries to the villages were other issues discussed at the meeting, Sitaula said, expressing confidence that tomorrow’s eight-party meeting would settle all the outstanding issues.

Maoist number 2 Dr Baburam Bhattarai and Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala were also present at the one-and-half-hour long meeting starting at 3:30 pm.

The Koirala-Prachanda meeting came in the wake of the Maoist warning that they would go for agitation if the interim constitution is not issued by January 14.

Home Minister Prasad Sitaula said yesterday that the interim constitution would be issued within a week. He said promulgation of the interim constitution was delayed as the United Nations’ monitoring team could not arrive here on the prescheduled time. nepalnews.com mk Jan 07 07
