UN monitoring team visits PLA camp in Chitwan

UN experts have begun monitoring of arms of the Maoist army from Monday.

A team of experts arrive at Chitwan’s Shaktikhor where the main camp of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is based, to start works of arms and army management. Shaktikhor is the headquarters of the PLA's 3 rd Division.

Another team of UN experts had inspected the PLA camp in Chulachuli, Ilam on Sunday.

The UN team has said works of arms monitoring would be carried out from Kathmandu and Nepalgunj in mid-western region. Of the 35 monitoring experts required, only 13 have arrived in Nepal by now.

Meanwhile, the joint committee of the Nepal Army, PLA and the UN experts have started training on arms monitoring to 101 former Gurkha soldiers in Kathmandu. The Gurkhas were appointed to assist in the arms and army monitoring before the full team of the UN experts arrive here.

After the two-day training, the Gurkha soldiers would be deployed to the PLA camps on Thursday and would start monitoring of arms from Friday. nepalnews.com ia Jan 08 07
