Court orders compensation to torture victim

The Kathmandu District Court has asked the government to provide compensation to a torture victim and departmental action against the perpetrator.

Acting upon a case filed by Indra Bahadur Tamang with assistance from the Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT), against the torture inflicted to him by a group of policemen led by Police Inspector Yuba Narayan Baidya in Ward Police Office in Soyambhu the Court asked Nepal government to give compensation worth 25,000 rupees to the victim and take departmental action against the police officials involved in the case.

Tamang was released after severe torture for three days.

Chairman of CVICT, Bhogendra Sharma, said the tendency of impunity is not decreasing as the court’s orders for taking departmental action against the perpetrators were not implemented in a transparent way and added that such tendency has boosted the morale of the perpetrators. nepalnews.com pb Jan 26 07
