Civil society members to visit terai

With the unrest in the Terai is increasing, leaders of civil society will visit the region to express solidarity with the genuine demands of the protesting groups and urge them to stop violent activities.

A group of 15 members representing Civil Movement for Peace and Democracy will begin their seven-day long visit from Birjung to Biratnagar from Saturday, reports said.

Speaking at a press meet, civil society leader Dr. Devendra Raj Pandey said, “We will go to express solidarity with the genuine demands and urge protesting groups to maintain mutual harmony.”

He also said that the civil society group would meet maximum number of people in the region. Pandey also informed that civil society groups have been putting pressure on the government to address the genuine demands of Madhesis.

The group will visit Siraha, Saptari, Janakpur, Biratnagar, Inaruwa, Birjung, Rautahat, Bara and other Terai districts, which were badly affected due to recent protest.

The civil society group includes Dr. Pandey, Shyam Shrestha, Hari Roka, Khagendra Shrestha, Bishnu Nisthuri, and Bijaykanta Karna among others.

“The genuine demands of Madhesis proportional election system and state restructure should be immediately addressed,” said one of the members of the group, Shyam Shrestha.

There has been unrest in various districts of Terai since the past week following clash between the cadres of Maoists and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF), which is protesting against the recently promulgated interim constitution in Lahan. nepalnews.com pb Jan 27 07
