Curfew imposed in Gaur; protests continue in terai

The District Administration Office Rautahat imposed curfew in Gaur municipality from 2 pm to 9 pm after the situation began to get out of hand there.

According to reports, the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) attacked the office of Agriculture Development Bank and torched three motorcycles, three computers and the documents.

Other districts of eastern terai remained shut on Sunday as well after the demonstration of the MJF.

Activists of MJF organized demonstrations in various parts of Siraha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Sunsari, Mahottari and Rautahat from early morning to enforce closure.

In Birgunj, protesters torched a police post at Gandak area of Birgunj this afternoon. MJF activists also pelted stones at the revenue office in Birgunj.

In Bara, police fired a few round of teargas shells after the protesters took to the streets defying curfew in Kalaiya.

Bazaars in Sarlahi district also remained closed.

Towns of eastern terai have remained tense since January 19 after a Madhesi activist was killed in Maoist firing at a protest organised by the MJF against the interim constitution.

Day time curfew is also in place in Janakpur, Birjung and Bara districts of eastern terai.

According to reports, protestors are organizing protest rallies in various parts of the districts defying curfew orders.
