FNJ concerned over continued attack against media

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has expressed its grave concern over the increasing attack against media in the past few days.

Amid unrest in ten districts of Terai, a number of journalists have been targeted and media houses vandalized.

According to the FNJ report, in the past few days, nine journalists were physically attacked by demonstrators while one was attacked by state security forces. Fifteen journalists have received life threats while five media houses have been vandalized including Radio Birgunj and Narayani FM in Birgunj.

Two district chapters of FNJ were also attacked by demonstrators while publications of one dozen papers have been stopped. Newspapers from Birgunj, Bara and Siraha have decided to stop publishing till the situation returns to normal.

Furthermore, at least seven journalists have been displaced due to the threat. In Bara district alone, three journalists were displaced after they received threatening calls.

The FNJ has appealed to all concerned not to target media and journalists. nepalnews.com sd Jan 30 07
