NFIN calls off two-day bandh
The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NFIN) has called off its two-day nationwide bandh (general strike) that was to start Sunday.
NFIN said the bandh has been withdrawn in view of the government’s letter expressing positive response over the issues raised by Janajatis. The NFIN has taken seriously the government’s assurance to deal with those issues, NFIN president Pasang Sherpa said after an internal meeting Saturday afternoon.
In a letter sent to the NFIN, peace and Reconstruction Minister Ram Chandra Poudel, who heads the three-member talk team of the government, called for withdrawal of the bandh and proposed formal negotiation at 2:00 pm Sunday on the demands of Janajatis.
He along with Home Minister Krishna Situala had met with Sherpa in the morning to request the latter to withdraw the bandh. The ministers also reiterated that the government was positive about the demands of Janajatis.
Demanding proportional electoral system for constituent assembly election and the federal structure of the state on the basis of region, ethnicity and language, indigenous groups and various affiliated organisations have been waging a movement for some time. nepalnews.com mk June 09 07
