CJ quizzes Janaastha editor; journos stage protest

Journalists staging sit-in programme at Maitighar, Kathmandu, protesting the Supreme Court order to three journalists to appear before the court on charges of defamation of Chief Justice Dilip Kumar Poudel, Monday, June 25 07. nepalnews.com/rh

Chief Justice (CJ) Dilip Kumar Poudel interrogated Kishor Shrestha, the editor/publisher of widely read weekly tabloid Janaastha today in connection with a revealing news story.

Shrestha was summoned to the Supreme Court to record his statement today for publishing a shocking news story two weeks earlier about “sexual abuse” by the CJ of his "adopted daughter".

Saying that the summoning of the editor of Janaastha is against the norms and spirit of free press, representatives of various media organisations including the Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ), Weekly Fortnightly Newspapers Network and Press Chautari Nepal picketed the Supreme Court (SC) for an hour this morning.

Meanwhile, expressing serious disapproval with the trend of the court summoning journalists for statement in relation with news reports published in newspapers, journalists organised sit-in demonstration today morning.

The sit-in was organised at Maitighar Mandala by the Kathmandu branch of Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ).

Organising a corner meeting after the demonstration, journalists said that although they were fully respectful of the sanctity of the court of law they have every right to write about the irregularities within the court that have tainted the image of the judiciary, and the illegal activities committed by the legal practitioners.

The speakers also said that by summoning journalists “for statement” on the basis of the news on irregularities the court has seriously undermined the freedom of press and expression. nepalnews.com ag June 25 07
