They protested the frequent attacks on entrepreneurs by the Maoists and demanded the government create an conducive environment for operating businesses.

Entrepreneurs organised the sit-in for about 30 minutes before heading to the prime minister's residence in Baluwatar to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala demanding industrial security one day after Maoists abducted and thrashed operator of Hotel Woodlands of Durbar Marg Hari Shrestha for not giving donation as demanded by the Maoists.

President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) Chandi Raj Dhakal, Chairman of Confederation of Nepalese Industries Binod Chaudhari and other top industrialists participated in the sit in.

Talking to Nepalnews, President of Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) Prakash Shrestha said that they are in the verge of closing down their businesses due to frequent attacks on the entrepreneurs.

He further demanded that the government should create conducive environment for running businesses. “We should be able to feel that there is a government in the country providing security to the businessmen,” he added.

Similarly, President of FNCCI, Dhakal, said that they will continue their protests till the Home Ministry provides security to the industrial sector.

Meanwhile, the Maoists warned Shrestha to reinstate all sacked hotel employees within 24 hours. Member of the Maoist affiliated All Nepal Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union, Pitambar Gautam, claimed that Shrestha was not beaten by them, adding. “Workers who were sacked from the hotel manhandled Shrestha.”

Gautam further said that they are in favour of reinstating all staff sacked from the Hotel as the Hotel was in profit.

Maoists have been continuing their excesses breaching the comprehensive peace accord and various accords reached with government and the seven political parties, even after they have joined parliamentary politics.

Entrepreneurs have warned that they will shut all businesses if the Prime Minister did not settle the issue and give assurance of providing security to the business communities. nepalnews.com pb/ia Mar 19 07
