Japan approves SDF mission to Nepal

Japan's ruling party has approved the names of the personnel to be dispatched to Nepal as Self Defense Force (SDF) to participate in the UN military observer mission.

According to Japan Times daily, a panel of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party approved the planned dispatch of the military team, under the law to cooperate with the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The plan to be submitted for approval to the party's policy commission and general council would be formally adopted by the government during a cabinet meeting scheduled for March 27.

This is the first new SDF deployment overseas since the Defense Agency was upgraded to the Defense Ministry in January this year.

Under the plan, six unarmed Ground Self-Defense Force members will arrive in Nepal from April 1 and stay here until March 31 next year to take part in the activities of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN). nepalnews.com ia Mar 21 07
