ANNFSU-R withdraws strikes in schools

The student wing of the Maoists, the All Nepal National Free Students Union – Revolutionary has withdrawn its two-day strike in private schools.

The ANNFSU-R decided, on Thursday morning, to withdraw the strike set for Thursday and Friday in the wake of fresh understanding among the business community and the eight party leadership including the Maoists.

The meeting of the ANNFSU-R decided to withdraw the strike because the business community had agreed to meet their demands, said Himal Sharma, general secretary of the union.

However, since the union withdrew its strike only at around 10 am, schools have remained closed on Thursday, said Umesh Shrestha, president of Private and Boarding Schools Organisation of Nepal (PABSON).

Earlier, angered by vandalism by the alleged activists of business community, the ANNFSU-R had announced closure of private schools for two days beginning Thursday.

Addressing a press meet in the capital on Wednesday, ANNFSU-R president Lekh Nath Neupane claimed that some participants of a rally organised by the business community had pelted stones at the union's office in Bagbazar on Tuesday and also burnt portraits of martyrs.

The Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON), on the other hand, had denied its hand in the vandalism and has expressed regrets over the incident.
