The festival falls on the ninth day of the waxing moon in the Nepali month of Chait as per the lunar calendar.

The festival is celebrated in commemoration of Lord Ram and the victory of truth over falsehood.

Prayers are offered at the temples of Lord Ram and a large number of devotees from Nepal and India come to fill the religious fair that takes place at the Ramjanaki Temple in Janakpur.

Devotees take holy dips in rivers, lakes and ponds, observe a day-long fast and recite from the Ramgita, Adhyatma, Balmikiya, Tulasikrit and Bhanubhaktiya Ramayana on the occasion of Ramnawami which is celebrated in remembrance of the birth of Lord Ram in Ayodhya on the day during the Treta Yuga or epoch.

Sri Ram was born as elder son to Dashrath, the King of Ayodhya, as the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He married Sita, daughter of King Janak of Mithila, present-day Janakpur region, in Nepal.

According to the scriptures, Lord Ram is credited with decimating the evil and cruel Rakshasas or demons and inspired humankind to embrace the path of truth by magnanimously accepting the harsh command of his father and the Ramnawami festival is celebrated to cherish the good deeds of Lord Ram. nepalnews.com pb Mar 27 07
