PM concerned by journos' agitation

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has expressed concern over the agitation and hunger strike by the journalists and workers of Nepal 1 television channel.

In his telephone conversation with Bishnu Nisthuri, president of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), PM has assured to draw the attention of channel management towards fulfilling the demands raised by the agitating journalists.

Meanwhile, after their 48-hour hunger strike ended on Saturday, the journalists of Nepal 1 have decided to launch indefinite hunger strike to press for their demands.

The journalists are in agitation for the last 17 days raising 20-point demands including provision of appointment letter, regular payment of salaries and minimum facilities.

On Saturday, UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, People's Front president Amik Sherchan, Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Anandidevi) general secretary Hridayesh Tripathy, Congress leader Sujata Koirala and ministers Giriraj Mani Pokharel and Rajendra Mahato visited the office of channel in Kamaladi to meet with journos in hunger strike – Raj Kumar Regmi, Rishi Dhamala and Bishnu Kalpit. As his health condition deteriorated, Kalpit has been hospitalized. The other two journalists, however, have started indefinite hunger strike.

Leaders and human rights activists have expressed solidarity with the agitation launched by Nepal 1 journalists. They have asked the government to intervene and the management to fulfill their demands. nepalnews.com sd May 05 07
