Poudel elected NSU president

Pradeep Poudel has been elected as president of Nepal Students Union (NSU) at the Tenth Convention of the student organisation held in Chitwan.

The results of election held on Friday came out on Saturday morning. Poudel, who is the current vice president of Congress' student wing, bagged 830 votes of the 1500 votes that were cast.

His nearest rival Bikash Koirala bagged 402 votes followed by Badri Pandey. Six candidates were in the fray for the post of presidency.

Poudel is said to represent the republican camp within the student organisation and had been backed by influential student leader Gagan Thapa.

Meanwhile, four representatives have been elected at the central committee from eastern region. Six were elected from central region; four from western region; four from mid-western region; and three from far western region. Likewise, four women members have also been elected. One each has been elected from technical field and overseas department.

After becoming elected, Poudel said he is committed to building a new Nepal by working to end monarchy through Constituent Assembly and consolidating democracy. nepalnews.com sd May 26 07
