Eight-party meeting ends, will resume on Monday
After day long discussions, the meeting eight parties has ended in Baluwatar, Saturday, and the top leaders have decided to resume their meeting on Monday.
Broadly, the leaders have agreed to go for second amendment in constitution and enact necessary electoral legislations and fix new date of Constituent Assembly (CA) elections with the consultation of Election Commission. However, decisions on these issues will be taken in the next meeting on Monday.
According to Jhal Nath Khanal, standing committee member of the Unified Marxist Leninist (UML), the discussions focused mainly on the delay of CA polls and need to fix its new date at the soonest. "Likewise, all other burning issues including agitations by Madhesis, Janajatis, teachers, employees and House impasse were discussed. The next meeting will be held on Monday at 8 am," said Khanal.
Earlier, the meeting, held in two rounds, took up issues such as parliament impasse, second amendment of constitution, Terai unrest, Melamchi problem, YCL activities, school strike and so on.
The first round of the meeting, which started from 10 am on Saturday, had decided to form a committee led by Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula to submit draft for second amendment of constitution and detail ways to reach understanding on all pending issues.
The meeting was halted for a few hours after the committee was formed headed by Sitaula and including Amrit Bohara, Krishna Mahara and Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat as members. The committee has submitted its draft to the second round of the meeting.
In the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala proposed to set date for the polls but UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and Maoist chairman Prachanda demanded review about the cause of delay in polls date, which was already mentioned in the constitution.
Speaking at the meeting most leaders said the uncertainty regarding CA elections must be ended soon.
