Doctors withdraw protest programmes

The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has called off its protest programmes following a six-point agreement with the government.

NMA general secretary Dr Kedar Narsingh KC told reporters after the negotiation with health ministry officials Wednesday evening that the protest programmes had been called off with the government agreeing to fulfil the key demands put forward by the association.

The government has agreed, among other things, to form a committee to look into security concerns of health professionals; present the amendment draft of health services act in the cabinet for debate and enact it in six weeks; and create more posts in health institutions.

Minister of state for health Shashi Shrestha was also present in the negotiation. Earlier today, doctors staged dharna (sit-in) at the main entrance of the ministry demanding immediate fulfilment of their 13-point demands.

In the wake of growing incidents of physical attacks on them, doctors across the country had been carrying out various protest programmes for some time and had threatened to launch tough agitation. nepalnews.com mk Sep 05 07
