NC Mahasamiti to decide on republic; NC-D wants unification as per ‘previous understanding’

A meeting of the central working committee (CWC) of the Nepali Congress decided to call the meeting of the Mahasamiti (general council) Sept 23-24 to endorse the party’s election manifesto, which will specifically clarify whether the party will go for 'democratic republic' after the constituent assembly polls.

Party leaders said the CWC meeting discussed at length the draft prepared by the Election Manifesto Drafting Committee’ as well as the issue of unification between the NC and the NC (Democratic).

“We have decided to hold debate on the manifesto at different levels of party organisations as well as the academia. The election manifesto will be finalised by the Mahasamiti meeting,” said Dr Ram Baran Yadav, co-general secretary of the party.

Although he would not say anything categorically on the issue of republic, Yadav hinted that the NC was least likely to go for some form of monarchy.

“The 11th general convention has already removed the term ‘monarchy’ form the party statute. The interim constitution also does not give any space for the King.”

Party leaders have not revealed much about the draft manifesto, but sources said it has adopted 'federal republic' as the main election agenda of the party.

Meanwhile, the CWC meeting of the NC (D) today decided to proceed with the unification drive according to the "previous understanding" between party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and NC president Girija Prasad Koirala.

“We are worried that the unification process is taking so much time. Today’s meeting has decided to unite the two parties according to the agreement between the two presidents,” senior NC-D leader Bimalendra Nidhi said.

Nidhi said Koirala and Deuba had reached an understanding to merge the organisations of the two parties from the central level to the village committees and appoint district presidents on the basis of their activism during the Janandolan-2. nepalnews.com mk Sep 05 07
