Nepali Congress is now a pro-republic party: Situala
Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situala, also an influential leader of the Nepali Congress (NC), has said the NC has now become a 'republican' party.
“For more than six decades, the Nepali Congress stood in favour of constitutional monarchy, but the party is not going to back the monarchy any more. Nepali Congress is now a republican party,” Sitaula told media persons in Pokhara Thursday.
He arrived in Pokhara this afternoon to attend the regional security meet beginning Friday.
Saying that the monarchy has become redundant in the present political context, Sitaula said the upcoming Mahasamiti meeting of the NC would formally adopt ‘democratic federal republic’ as its election agenda.
Situala's comment comes a day after the meeting of NC central working committee backed the draft election manifesto, which has adopted republic as the main agenda for the constituent assembly election. nepalnews.com mk Sep 06 07
