India shows interest in Congress unification; taskforce meeting inconclusive

India, which has been stressing on timely election to constituent assembly, has shown interest in the unification between the Nepali Congress (NC) and NC (Democratic).

Indian envoy to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukhejee expressed India’s interest in the unification issue during his meeting with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala held at the latter’s residence in Baluwatar Saturday morning. Strengthening security along the border ahead of the polls and improving security situation in the Terai were other issues discussed at the meeting, it is learnt.

Unable to reach a consensus, the presidents of two Congress parties had on Friday directed the taskforce to sort out the remaining differences.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the taskforces of the NC and the NC (D) today could not reach a decision on the unification issue.

According to Dr Prakash Saran Mahat, a member of the NC (D) taskforce, the two sides are yet to arrive at an understanding regarding the leaderships of a dozen district committees as well as some the size of the new central working committee. He said the taskforce members would again meet to discuss the points of contention.

The taskforces have been the asked to iron out the differences despite their failure earlier to reach a decision.

Sources said the unified Congress party will have a jumbo central committee with almost all the central members of the two parties remaining intact.
