Parliamentary hearing committee to quiz CJ-designate
The Parliamentary Special Hearing Committee Sunday decided to summon Chief Justice-designate Kedar Prasad Giri for questioning regarding the complaints registered against his nomination.
A meeting of the hearing committee held in the afternoon decided to quiz Giri on Tuesday. The nine-member sub-committee formed to probe the complaints against him could not come up with any decision and suggested that the issue be decided by the special committee itself.
Members of the committee are divided over Giri’s nominations. Committee members from the left parties are known to be against the nomination while the Nepali Congress lawmakers want Giri’s name cleared by the committee.
The committee has registered altogether 16 complaints, most of which accuse Giri of failing to maintain professional ethics while deciding some cases including the case on financial embezzlement in Mahalaxmi Sugar Mill.
As the most senior judge in the apex court, Giri is currently working as the acting Chief Justice. Former Chief Justice Dilip Kumar Poudel had retired on Sept 7. nepalnews.com mk Sep 09 07
