NSP on the verge of split again as rival factions expel each other

Nepal Sadbhawana Party (NSP) is on the verge of suffering a vertical split with leaders of the rival factions of the party expelling or suspending each other another from the party.

Minister for Commerce, Supplies and Industries, Rajendra Mahato, speaking at the Reporters Club Sunday (Sep 09 07) said some ‘elements’ with his Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandi Devi) were trying to create disturbance in the constituent assembly election process. He said this in reaction to the demand for his resignation from within the party. nepalnews.com/ANA

NSP chairperson Anandidevi Singh suspended four senior leaders of the rival camp -- senior vice-chairman Laxman Lal Karna, vice-chairman and Commerce Minister Rajendra Mahato, Ram Narayan Yadav including general secretary Anil Kumar Jha -- from the party’s ordinary membership Sunday.

The move came hours after the party’s Central Work Performance Committee (CWPC) that started from Saturday under the chairmanship of senior vice-chairman Laxman Lal Karna suspended party general secretary Shyam Sundar Gupta accusing him of working against the interest and statute of the party and also tabled a no-confidence motion against chairperson Singh.

The leaders of both factions claim that they suspended the leader from the rival camp as per the section 6 (10) of the party statute. The dispute had surfaced after Singh met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Friday and handed the PM a letter demanding removal of Mahato from office and replacing him with general secretary Gupta.

NSP chairperson Anandidevi Singh also decided to postpone the convention scheduled to begin from coming Thursday in Birgunj saying that there were “inconsistencies” while selecting representatives for the convention. She also accused a nexus between vice chairman Laxman Lal Karna and Commerce Minister Rajendra Mahato of deliberately trying to sideline leaders who fought for democracy.

Karna-Mahato faction, however, have vowed they would hold the convention on schedule in Birgunj under all circumstances. They are of the assertion that holding the convention is the decision of the party’s extensive central committee and none of the officials including chairperson Singh has the right to defer it or postpone it.

Challenging the decision, Anandidevi’s side said that as the meeting of the CWPC was held in the absence of the chairperson, it is illegitimate and the party cadres will boycott the general convention. They also said that they won’t allow the general convention to be held forcefully. According to reports, chairperson Singh is preparing to reshuffle the Central Committee to sideline leaders of the Karna-Mahato faction. nepalnews.com ag Sep 10 07
