Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary Ram Chandra Poudel Monday said the long-awaited unification between the NC and the NC (Democratic) would materialise on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters in Chitwan's Bharatpur, Poudel quoted NC president Girija Prasad Koirala as telling him this morning that the two parties would reunite after two days.

Koirala and NC (D) president Sher Bahadur Deuba have agreed to iron out the remaining differences over the unification process within the coming two days, Poudel, who holds the Peace and Reconstruction portfolio in the interim government, said.

Earlier, the leaders had claimed that the unification would be announced today, coinciding with the 94th birth anniversary of B.P Koirala.

The unification process hangs fire for quite some time despite several rounds of negotiations between the two parties. The top brasses face intense pressure from their respective party ranks for quick reunion in the face of nearing constituent assembly elections.

Meanwhile, NC vice president Shushil Koirala has said the two parties are in the final stage of negotiation for unification.

Addressing the inaugural session of the general convention of Nepal Press Union (NPU) in Pokhara Monday, Koirala said the unification would be announced "very soon".

Speaking further, Koirala said the political system of Nepal would not be 'people's republic', as has been proposed by the Maoists.

The NC recently decided to go for republican order after the constituent assembly elections.

The NC vice-president said the allegation on NC of trying to side with the monarchy had ended after the party took decision in favour of republic.

Describing the activities of the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) as an obstacle to free and fair CA elections, he stressed the need to immediately check the unruly activities of the YCL. nepalnews.com mk/ia Sep 10 07
