No consensus on Shailaja Acharya

The Parliamentary Special Hearing Committee could not reach to a consensus to approve the nomination of Shailaja Acharya as Nepal's ambassador to India.

The committee had, on Wednesday, conducted a hearing of eight such nominees. Even though the committee reached consensus to approve nominations of seven ambassadors, Acharya's name could not be approved due to stiff protest by communist MPs including those from Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) and People's Front.

Acharya faced questions for her 'pro-monarchy' statements during the April agitation of 2006.

Acharya, on her part, recalled her four and a half decade long involvement in pro-democratic struggle. She refused charges that she was pro-monarchy. She also stressed about her acquaintance with Indian leadership including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi at personal level.

The committee, however, approved nominations of seven envoys including Pradeep Khatiwada (Bangladesh), Pramesh Hamal (Belgium), Tanka Karki (China ), Bal Bahadur Kunwar (Pakistan), Dr. Ganesh Yonjan (Japan), Dr. Surya Nath Mishra (Qatar) and Gunalaxmi Sharma BK (Myanmar).

The hearing of remaining of the 21 envoy nominees would be conducted on Friday. nepalnews.com sd Sep 13 07
