Mahato faction proceeds with general convention

Amidst intense dispute with the rival faction, the Rajendra Mahato-led faction of Nepal Sadbhawana Party (NSP-Anandi Devi) started the party’s general convention in Birgunj on Thursday.

The general convention that was to kick off at 1:00 pm got delayed by two hours as the activists of the rival faction tried to create disturbance at the convention venue.

Security has been beefed up in and around the convention venue amidst fears of violent clash between the rival factions, reports say.

The convention is likely to expel chairperson Anandidevi Singh from the post. Singh had earlier announced suspension of the convention, but Mahato's faction has gone ahead with it.

Only chairperson Anandidevi and general secretary Shyam Sundar Gupta of the 13-member Central Work Performance Committee (CWPC) of the party are not participating in the general convention.

Likewise, a majority – altogether 35 - of the 49-member National Working Committee of the party are taking part in the convention. They include senior vice-chairman Laxman Lal Karna, vice-chairmen Mahato, and Narsingh Chaudhari, general secretary Anil Kumar Jha and spokesperson Sarita Giri.

A no-confidence motion has already been filed against chairperson Anandidevi Singh. As per the party statute a simple majority of the representatives taking part in the general convention can remove the party chairperson from the post, something which looks very likely.

Earlier, speaking at an interaction programme organised in Birgunj, vice president Mahato said that the NSP (A) special convention would not be put off just because a few members want it. He claimed that "a few NSP members" including Hridayesh Tripathy were against holding the special convention because it wasn't favorable time for them.

Meanwhile, Anandidvei Singh has called an extended meeting of the party's national working committee on Monday afternoon.

Issuing a statement Wednesday, Singh said the meeting to be held at the party's central office at Baneshwor would set a new date for the special convention. nepalnews.com ag Sep 11 07
