Koirala, Nepal agree to hold 'immediate' eight-party meet over Maoist demands
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal held nearly two-hour long meeting at Koirala’s residence in Baluwatar over the Maoist demands Sunday afternoon.
According to Amrit Bohara, a UML leader who was present at the meeting, the two leaders agreed to “immediately call a meeting of the eight parties” to settle the Maoist demands.
He said, “The conclusion of today’s meeting is that all the problems facing the nation should be brought to the negotiating table and find a solution. The two leaders agreed to immediately call the meeting of the eight parties.”
The UML general secretary is learnt to have suggested Koirala to agree on some of the demands right away and discuss the key demands, including announcement of republic before constituent assembly polls and adoption of proportional representation-based election system, in the eight-party alliance.
A few Nepali Congress leaders were also present at the meeting.
The meeting between the Prime Minister and the UML general secretary came a day after Maoist chairman Prachanda held separate meetings with both of them, asking them to agree on the 22 demands raised by this party.
The Maoist party has said it will quit the government and launch protest movement beginning Sept 18 if the demands are not met by then. nepalnews.com mk Sept 16 07
