Prashant Tamang becomes Indian Idol; celebrations break out in Kathmandu

Beating his nearest competitor Amit Paul from Shillong, Prashant Tamang from Darjeeling became Indian Idol in a popular television talent-hunt show of Sony Television, India on Sunday night.

Prashant, 24, a constable in Kolkata Police, who hails from a Nepali-origin family in Darjeeling, India, has been hugely popular among Nepali-speaking community inside India and Nepal.

Based on SMS and phone voting, Prashant Tamang became the winner in the singing talent hunt show. The television station informed that they had received 70 million votes breaking all past records.

Prashant's craze had swept Darjeeling, Sikkim and other areas where Nepali-speaking people live. Tens of thousands of people had camped in Darjeeling since last one week with the aim of continuously voting for him.

Immediately after the winner of the show was announced in a Grand Finale held in New Delhi, crowds rushed to the streets in celebrations in Kathmandu , Lalitpur, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dharan and other places of Nepal. His hometown Darjeeling exploded in revelry with fire-crackers and rallies.

Prashant Tamang has won IRs 10 million worth music contract with Sony Television, a brand new car and other gifts.

Prashant Coming To Perform in Nepal

The winner of Indian Idol title Prashant Tamang is scheduled to perform live in Nepal next week.

In an event organised by Surya Nepal (P) Ltd, Prashant will perform live on September 29 and 30.

Accompanied by two other Indian Idol finalists Ankita Mishra and Deepali Kishore along with Nepali pop singer Nima Rumba, Prashant will perform live in St. Xavier's ground in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on September 29 followed by another performance in Pokhara on September 30. nepalnews.com sd Sep 24 07
