251 PR candidatures to be scrapped
The Election Commission (EC) has 'scrapped' the candidatures of 251 closed list candidates contesting the constituent assembly election under proportional representation (PR) system.
The EC has not formally announced the cancellation of these candidatures, but sources said that 66 underage candidates and 185 others who failed to present their citizenship certificates are going to lose their nominations.
The EC is expected make an announcement regarding the cancellations on Thursday.
The 66 PR candidates who are found to be under age 25 were asked to come up with documentary evidence of their age eligibility while 227 candidates were to come up with their citizenship certificates within 5 pm Wednesday.
While none of the 66 candidates were able to prove their eligibility 42 candidates presented the copies of citizenship certificates.
Those losing the candidatures belong to major parties like Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist, Janamorcha Nepal, Rastriya Prajatantra Party as well as smaller parties. nepalnews.com mk Apr 02 08
