CPN-M's winning streak continues

Maoists continue their winning streak with 109 seats out of 195 seats declared so far, leaving the two main rivals, Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, far behind.

With victories in Khotang, Ramechhap and Rukum districts the Maoists have bagged a total of 109 seats (till 7:00 pm) while Nepali Congress is in second position with 32 seats and the UML is trailing behind NC with 27 seats.

Results indicate that the Maoists are close to a majority under the 240-seat first-past-the-post system.

Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) has emerged as a strong political force in Terai, winning 17 seats. Mahatha Thakur's Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) and Sadbhawana Party (SP) led by Rajendra Mahato have bagged four seats and two seats respectively.

According to latest updates, the Maoists are leading in five constituencies, including three in Rautahat district, while the NC, UML and MJF are leading in four constituencies each.

Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) has bagged two seats while Janamorcha Nepal has won a single seat. An independent candidate, Babban Singh, has won the election Rautahat constituency-1.

The Election Commission has said 98 stations in 21 constituencies, including three constituencies of western district of Baglung, will need repolling.

Meanwhile, the counting of proportional votes has also begun in 110 constituencies where results of direct election have been declared. The Maoists are taking lead in proportional voting also, reports say. nepalnews.com mk Apr 14 08
