Loktantra Diwas, or Democracy Day, is being observed across the country
amid various programmes Wednesday.
The three-day event marks the collapse of King Gyanendra's regime on this
day two years ago following a nationwide mass uprising in which more than
two-dozen pro-democracy fighters had lost their lives and thousands others
were injured.
To mark the Loktantra Diwas, political parties and their sister
organisations, civil society organisations and educational institutions
are organising various programmes in the capital city and in various
districts. Similar programmes were organised on Tuesday as well to mark
the day.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala attended a special function organised
by the Nepal Army at Tundikhel in Kathmandu Wednesday afternoon on the
occasion of Loktantra Diwas. Speaker Subas Nemwang, ministers, NA chief
Rookmangud Katawal and senior government officials were also present on
the occasion.
The Loktantra Diwas Main Organising Committee formed by the government
under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Koirala also organised various
functions to celebrate the event till three days.
