Mahara says Maoists ready to go alone if need be to form government

CPN-Maoist party appears desperate to head the new government following its electoral triumph as Seven Party Alliance leaders bicker over whether the former rebel party is fit for running the country and if whether they should join the Maoist led government as junior coalition partners.

Maoist spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara has said that the party will lead the government as it is the biggest party in the Constituent Assembly.

On the sidelines of the ongoing central committee meeting of the party, Mahara, who is also information minister, further said that if other parties don't want to join them in a coalition government then "we would form a government by ourselves."

Going a bit further, senior Maoist leader C.P Gajurel said that until the new constitution is not formulated, a new Maoist-led government with Prime Minister having full executive powers would be formed for now.

Talking at a program organized in the capital city Wednesday, Gajurel, who is the chief of the party's foreign desk, reiterated his party policy of running the government under "consensus and cooperation with all political parties" till the new constitution is not drafted.

He said that as the interim constitution doesn't have any provision for a separate head-of-state, so the executive powers would be vested on the Prime Minister.

The remarks by the man tipped to be the next foreign minister echoes that of other Maoist leaders.

On Tuesday, the CPN-Maoist central committee decided that the party should be allowed to head the government first and negotiations on power sharing and constitutinal amendment can be discussed later. nepalnews.com ag Apr 30 08
