Inclusion of 'non athletes' in Olympic team triggers protests

A scene was created at Tribhuwan International airport on Monday night when eight olympians were taking flight to China to take part in Olympic Games.

Nepal Republic Sports Federation (NRSF) and National Sports Council Employees Association (NSCEA) staged protest at TIA, compelling police to intervene as players and officials were being seen off.

Protestors shouted against Youth Olympic Camp participant Nancy Lama and also had verbal scuffle with the chef-de-mission Maskey. They even tried to bar Education and Sports Minister Pradeep Nepal and his wife. The protesters claimed that half of the 36-member delegation were unrelated with sports.

Similarly, another group of the agitators, led by NSCEA President Narayan Dev Rana, staged protests at the Ring Road and were involved in the scuffle with the police, who baton-charged to disperse them.

Meanwhile, Ace Taekwondo player Deeepak Bista will have the honour to carry the national flag during the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games beginning in Beijing. nepalnews.com Aug 05 08
