Transport services come to halt in East as operators go on strike

Transportation services have come to a halt in the eastern region due to an indefinite strike called by transport operators and workers, demanding security.

No passenger buses plied on the East-West Highway, east of Janakpur, while transportation service also remained closed in Mechi, Koshi and Sagarmatha zones, reports said. The transport operators and workers blocked the traffic by placing vehicles on the road at different places.

The protesting operators and workers have demanded Rs 1 million compensation to the family of Krishna Bhujel, a driver who was killed by an unidentified gang in Sarlahi on Thursday, free education to his children and action against the murderers.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the representatives of the transporters' association and different unions of workers held in Itahari, Sunsari district, decided to intensify the strike. They announced after the meeting that the strike would continue unless the local authorities agreed to meet the demands. nepalnews.com Aug 10 08
