Transporters' strike hits life in the east
Vehicles continue to remain out of the road in four zones of the eastern
region on the fourth day in a row due to a strike called by transport
operators and workers.
The agitators have called indefinite strike in Koshi, Mechi, Sagarmatha
and Janakpur zones demanding security after an unknown armed group killed
a bus driver, Krishna Bhujel, in Sarlahi district on August 7.
Hundreds of passengers from eastern districts as well as from India have
been stranded at Itahari.
The agitators also vandalised a number of vehicles in Dharan, Itahari and
Inrauwa areas for defying the strike.
They have also warned of nationwide strike if the government failed to
address their demands on time.
Educational institutions, industries, marketplaces and private offices
remain closed, while people have begun to face the shortage of food items
and vegetables in the market. nepalnews.com ia Aug 12 08
