Prachanda set to be elected as the PM
Four months after the Constituent Assembly (CA) election, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' is finally set to be elected as the prime minister.
The election will take place, Friday afternoon at 1 pm, at CA where any candidate bagging the halfway mark or 298 seats can lay claim to the coveted post.
The Maoist chief commands support from 227 members of his party; 108 members of Unified Marxist Leninist (UML), 52 members of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) and 8 members of People's Front (PF). In total, he will bag the support of almost two-third majority.
His only opponent in the election is Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress (NC).
Once he is elected, Prachanda will become the second communist leader after late Manmohan Adhikary to have been elected as prime minister of Nepal. And this will also mark a full circle in the political life of Prachanda who had led an armed insurgency for one decade.
Meanwhile, Kantipur daily reports that Maoists, UML and MJF have agreed to allocate nine ministerial portfolios to Maoists; six to UML and 4 to MJF with other smaller parties getting their share. It adds that Maoists will bag Defense, UML will get Home and MJF will get Foreign Affairs portfolio. Understandings on other portfolios are yet to be reached. nepalnews.com sd Aug 15 08
