PM reaches Sunsari to inspect Koshi flood disaster

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal along with a team of various political party leaders including Bharat Mohan Adhikari of CPN (UML) and Upendra Yadav of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) reached Sunsari to inspect the Koshi flood affected people.

The team left Kathmandu at around 8:30 in the morning with Rs 20 million cash as relief package to the flood victims. The team also includes officials from the home ministry, who were joined by officials from district administration of Sunsari.

In the meantime, Nepali Congress is set to send a separate delegation to the disaster site led by its central committee member Sujata Koirala later today.

According to reports, the number of people being displaced by the flood has crossed 50,000 while some 10,000 are still awaiting rescue in Shripur, Haripur and Kushwaha VDCs.

However, the local residents say the rescue operation has not been effective due to climatic conditions. The two helicopters of the Nepal Army deployed for rescue operation failed to pick up people from flood affected areas. Motorboats have been used for now.

Reports further say that over 100 people are out of touch after the four VDCs are completely filled with water. Water level has not decreased. nepalnews.com ia Aug 20 08
