Govt looks for ‘funding’ to save Dolma’s life
The government has appealed all concerned individuals and organisations in the country and abroad to contribute financially to help assign a defense lawyer for Dolma Sherpa who is incarcerated in Kuwaiti jail from the past many months facing a death sentence for allegedly killing a Filipino woman.
Issuing a release Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the government has given “high priority” to collection of additional amount of money needed to save the life of Dolma Sherpa.
“Although Dolma’s case is currently being reviewed at the appellate court and has been provided a lawyer for it, a capable lawyer is yet to be assigned to defend her case and for which the Nepal government is engaged in collecting sufficient funds,” the statement said, adding that a representative of the Nepal government recently visited Kuwait and met with concerned officials including the defendant herself and expressed commitment to extend all the necessary support to save her life.
The statement said that the government has arranged Rs 4 lakhs as “seed money” to provide legal support to Dolma Sherpa, but which is just a fraction of an estimated Rs 50 lakhs needed to appoint a “capable” defense lawyer and also to compensate the family of the deceased Filipino women. nepalnews.com ag Feb 17 08
