Govt-UDMF talks linger on
The much anticipated decisive talks between the government and the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) did not materialise on Wednesday.
The Front leader Rajendra Mahato, who heads the Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP), informed that the front members, on Wednesday, engaged in internal preparations and homework for the decisive talks.
On the other hand, Mahantha Thakur, chief of Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP), told Kantipur that talks could not proceed after the government sought time to reflect on latest Front demand of group-wise recruitment of Madhesis in Nepali Army (NA).
“The government could not reach any decision on our demand for group-wise recruitment in NA,” said Thakur, who talked with Home Minister Krishna Sitaula at night.
Some reports even suggest that the UDMF leaders did not honour the invitation by Home Minister Sitaula for talks demanding a call from the Prime Minister himself.
As doubts and mistrusts persist, the ‘decisive’ talks have not happened even as the agitation and indefinite bandh in Terai districts continue to throw the normal life of people out of gear since the past two weeks. nepalnews.com sd Feb 28 08
