UN’s mandate ‘clipped’ following objection from member states
The UN's resolution on Nepal has been deferred to Wednesday after China and other member states raised objection to Britain’s draft on it, news reports said.
The resolution, which had been scheduled to be adopted on Monday, was pushed back in closed-door meetings saying that in the draft the UK was trying to go beyond what Nepal was requesting from the UN, Inner City Press (ICP) reported.
The changes suggested to the initial draft includes omitting the lines urging all the parties to take full advantage of the expertise and willingness of UNMIN to support the peace process" and stressing the need for coordination and complementary efforts between the mission and all the UN actors in the UN area.
According to ICP, the final version of the resolution even drops the reference to the UN's Human Rights Office in Nepal. Also dropped is the call to the government of Nepal to recognise the capacity of UNMIN police advisers to advise the national police on security. nepalnews.com ag Jan 23 08
