Hospitals close down services

Hospitals in the valley have shut down their services demanding security from the government.

Nepal Medical Association (NMA) had decided to close down all services of private, government and teaching hospitals except emergency services on Wednesday in the valley.

The hospital strike has affected thousands of patients.

The NMA had made the decision to protest the recent vandalism of Everest Nursing Home by relatives of a patient who had died in course of treatment. The patients resorted to vandalism accusing of malpractice.

In a statement issued by its general secretary Dr. Kedar Narsingh KC, the association has also condemned the death-threats being made to surgeon Dr. Subodh Kumar Adhikari, who was involved in the treatment.

The NMA has demanded security for hospitals and medical staffs. Nepal Surgeons Society, too, has backed the NMA's protest calls.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has formed a probe committee led by Dr Gyanendra Raj Upreit to investigate the incident surrounding vandalism. The committee also includes representative from Consumer Rights Forum. nepalnews.com sd Jul 09 08
