Action initiated against rebel policemen

Nepal Police has initiated legal action against 11 police personnel who were involved in taking senior officer hostages at the Nepalgunj-based Riot Control Police Battalion.

Four leaders - sub-inspectors Dhan Bahadur BK and Sailendra Basnet and head constables Khusiram Chaudhari and Birendra Karki — have been taken into custody for legal action. They have been suspended from their responsibility and were produced before the press meet on Monday afternoon.

The Home Ministry also plans to set up special police court to investigate the incident.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that at least 19 policemen were involved in the hostage incident.

Provisions in the Police Act permit authorities to sentence for life term and seize all properties of the rebelling policemen inside the barrack.

The agitators had taken hostage seven senior officers — chief of Bheri zonal police office SSP Parshuram Khatri, chief of the battalion SP Akhtar Ali Ansari, chief of regional police training centre SP Sudip Acharya, Banke police chief SP Ghanshyam Bhatt, inspector Prabin Pokhrel, SI Kali Bahadur KC and accountant SI Chakrapani Acharya — for 39 hours. nepalnews.com ia July 15 08
