Parties intensify parleys over tomorrow's presidential election

On the eve of the crucial presidential poll, leaders of major parties are busy in political parleys as part of their attempt to muster support for their candidates.

Nepali Congress (NC), which has fielded its general secretary Dr Ram Baran Yadav in the presidential race - held a meeting with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) on Friday, discussing the possibility of the latter's backing for its candidate.

Forum's communication chief B.P Yaday said no agreement was reached at the meeting and that there would be further discussions between the two parties.

MJF has fielded its own candidate for the vice presidential slot, but has pledged support to Maoist-backed presidential candidate, Ram Raja Prasad Singh.

Meanwhile, top leaders of NC and CPN (UML) are to meet today after internal discussions, according to NC sources.

NC and UML are said to be trying to form an alliance owing to the latter's battered relation with the Maoists who went back on their promise to support a UML candidate, and instead proposed their own candidates.

Meanwhile, CPN (Maoist) also held a joint meeting with fringe left parties today. During the meeting held at the Maoist parliamentary office in Singha Durbar, Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' urged the left parties for support to Ram Raja Prasad Singh and vice-presidential candidate Shanta Shrestha.

Leaders of Janamorcha Nepal, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, CPN (Unified) were present at the meeting with the Maoists. Although there was no formal statement by the time this report was filed some left parties are known to have pledged support to the Maoist-backed candidates.nepalnews.com mk July 18 08
