SC seeks written explanation from govt, VP Jha over swearing in Hindi

The Supreme Court (SC) Monday asked the government and the Vice President Parmananda Jha to furnish written explanation regarding the oath taken by Vice President in Hindi.

A single bench of Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma issued the order in the name of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Office of the Vice President to submit explanation within seven days.

The court also asked the concerned authorities to give high priority to the issue. However, the SC said the office of the President need not submit the explanation.

Advocate Bal Krishna Neupane had filed case at the apex court on Friday demanding rejection of the oath taken by Jha and demanding that he take oath again, in Nepali language, or be expelled from the post. The offices of the President, Vice President and Prime Minister were the opponents in the case.

Jha and coordinator of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, Upendra Yadav, have been defending the swearing in Hindi despite the growing protests across the country. nepalnews.com ia July 28 08
