Rabuka had staged military coups in 1987 twice in Fiji as a colonel against the democratically elected ethnic-Indian dominated government. There are ethnic Fijian and ethnic Indian people living in Fiji. Speaking at the Reporters' Club Monday, he clearly indicated that no army coup would sustain in Nepal.
"I can not say if the army coup is possible in Nepal or not," he said, "But, there are multiple players here [to put resistance] if such attempts are ever made."
"Without people's support such coup cannot sustain," he added.
Rabuka was democratically elected as Prime Minister in 1992 and remained in power until 1999. He apologised for staging coup in 2006. During the coup, he had abolished the 113-year long Fijian link with British monarchy.
Currently, there is a military backed interim government in Fiji. Comparing Nepal's situation with Fiji, he said Nepal's transition has been very smooth compared to Fiji.
He stressed the need for multi-racial nationalism in the plural society like Nepal and Fiji.
Rabuka also made it clear that he had no specific agenda during his visit. He met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba during his visit. He also visited Everest region during his stay in Nepal. He had arrived here on last Monday. nepalnews.com ps June 16 08
