Govt to send volunteers to village schools

The government has decided to send youths who have been rendered jobless even after passing their post-graduate or master's degree to schools in villages as volunteers from this year on.

For this purpose, a National Volunteer Service Preparation Committee has been constituted under the University Grant Commission (UGC) to oversee the entire procedure.

UGC chairman Dr Kamal Krishna Joshi told Rastriya Samachar Samiti that the Committee would conduct a study and research and submit its report within a few days after which it would put it for discussion among the concerned agencies including the Ministry of Education. He further said the volunteers would be selected on merit basis.

However, there hasn't been any decision on how many volunteers would be sent to schools in rural areas across the country. But it has been decided that every volunteer would have to stay in the village for a period of ten months at least. The draft of the volunteer mobilization including the directive for the same finalized by the committee would be brought for discussion within a few days and would be implemented from this very year. Such teachers would also have to study the economic, social, linguistic and cultural significance of the village community where he or she is sent to as a volunteer. nepalnews.com ag Mar 03 08
